Pelvic Pain and Bleeding

What is pelvic pain?

It is any pain felt in the lower abdomen, below the navel. It can be constant or occur only at certain times, such as when urinating or during sexual intercourse. In urology, pelvic pain may be related to urinary tract infections, stones, bladder problems, prostate issues, or even cancers. If you also have a burning sensation when urinating or a fever, it could be a urinary tract infection, and it is important to treat it promptly.

What does blood in the urine mean?

Seeing blood in the urine (hematuria) can be alarming, but it is not always serious. However, it should always be evaluated. The most common causes are:

• Urinary tract infections
• Kidney or bladder stones (see stone treatment)
• Prostate problems in men (see prostate check-up)
• Tumors in the kidney, bladder, or urethra
• Trauma or injuries

The bleeding can be visible (red, pink, or dark) or microscopic, detected only in a urine test.

How do I evaluate these symptoms?

During the consultation, I perform a complete physical examination and, depending on the case, I may order:

• General urinalysis and urine culture
• Blood tests to assess kidney function
• Renal and bladder ultrasound
• Cystoscopy to directly view the inside of the bladder

If necessary, we can also schedule urological surgeries or minimally invasive procedures to treat the cause.

Treatment for Pelvic Pain and Bleeding

The treatment depends on the identified cause:

• Infections: antibiotics and pain relievers
• Stones: medications to help pass them or procedures to break them
• Prostate problems: medications or surgery if necessary
• Tumors: surgery or oncology treatment

When Should I See a Doctor?

You should book an appointment if you have:

• Persistent pelvic pain
• Visible blood in the urine or detected in tests
• Pain when urinating or during sexual intercourse
• Fever, nausea, or vomiting associated
