If your doctor recommended a prostate biopsy in Guanacaste, I want you to know you’re not alone.
I’m Dr. Nathaly Gómez, a urologist in Guanacaste, and I’m here to guide you through this process with clarity and peace of mind.

What is a prostate biopsy?
A prostate biopsy is a medical procedure performed to obtain small samples of prostate tissue for laboratory analysis.
Its main goal is to detect the presence of cancer cells or rule out prostate cancer.
This biopsy is usually recommended when a prostate check-up shows abnormalities, either due to an elevated PSA or a digital rectal exam with suspicious findings.

Why is a prostate biopsy performed?
There are several reasons to recommend this procedure:
- Elevated PSA in blood tests
- Abnormal results in the digital rectal exam
- Follow-up for patients with a history of prostate cancer
In my experience, many patients come feeling worried and scared.
It’s normal to feel uncertain, but I assure you that the biopsy is the only reliable way to confirm or rule out a prostate cancer diagnosis.

How should I prepare for the biopsy?
Before the procedure, I will give you specific instructions, but in general they include:
- Taking preventive antibiotics to avoid infections
- Fasting depending on the scheduled time
- Stopping certain medications if necessary
During the appointment, we will address all your questions.
You can book at any of my clinics in Guanacaste, whether in Santa Cruz, Jicaral, or Nicoya, whichever is most convenient for you.

How is a prostate biopsy performed?
The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes. A transrectal ultrasound is used to guide the needle and collect the necessary samples.
I usually apply local anesthesia so you feel as little discomfort as possible. After the biopsy, you can go home the same day and resume your normal activities in a short time, following the recommended rest and care instructions.

Biopsy results
Results may take between 5 and 10 days. Once they are ready, we will review the report together during the consultation to decide the best course of action—whether active surveillance, treatment, or urological surgery as needed.
If you require urological surgery, I will explain each option and its benefits in detail.
