Urology in Nicoya
Dr. Nathaly Gómez
I’m Dr. Nathaly Gómez, a urologist in Guanacaste, and I want to talk to you about the importance of having a prostate check-up, especially if you’re over 40.

Why is a prostate check-up important?
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, but when detected early, it has a high chance of being treated and cured. Many men feel embarrassed or afraid of the exam, but I assure you that an early check-up can save your life. In addition, this check-up not only detects cancer but also other issues such as benign prostate enlargement or infections.
When should I get a prostate check-up?
I recommend that all men:
- Start their annual check-up at age 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer
- Start at age 50 if there is no family history
If you have symptoms such as difficulty urinating, weak urine flow, waking up several times at night to urinate, or blood in your urine, it is important to get evaluated as soon as possible. You can read more about this topic on the pelvic pain and urinary bleeding page.

What does a prostate check-up involve?
The check-up includes two main components:
- PSA Test – a blood test that measures Prostate-Specific Antigen. An elevated level may be a sign of cancer or other issues.
- Digital rectal exam – allows evaluation of the size, shape, and consistency of the prostate. It is quick and painless, though it may be uncomfortable, and lasts less than a minute.
Depending on the results, we may recommend additional studies such as a prostate biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.

Benefits of an early check-up
Getting a prostate check-up allows you to:
- Detect cancer in its early stages
- Identify benign enlargement and treat it before it affects your quality of life
- Prevent complications such as urinary tract infections or kidney damage
If you also have frequent urinary tract infections, you can read about their management in urinary tract infection treatment.
