Urology in Guanacaste
Dr. Nathaly Gómez
I am Dr. Nathaly Gómez, a urologist in Guanacaste, and if you have been advised to undergo a cystoscopy, I want you to know exactly what it is and why it is important for your health.
What is a cystoscopy?
Cystoscopy is a procedure that allows visualization of the inside of the bladder and urethra using a very small camera called a cystoscope. It is performed to diagnose various urinary problems such as recurrent infections, blood in the urine, difficulty urinating, or pelvic pain. Many patients ask me if this test is painful. The truth is that it may feel a bit uncomfortable, but I use local anesthesia to make it as tolerable as possible.
When is cystoscopy recommended?
There are several medical reasons why I may recommend this procedure during your consultation, including:- Presence of blood in the urine without an apparent cause
- Recurrent urinary tract infections that do not improve with treatment (see urinary tract infection treatment)
- Difficulty urinating or a weak flow
- Persistent pelvic pain or burning (see causes of pelvic pain)
- Suspected bladder stones (see kidney stone treatment)

How should I prepare for a cystoscopy?
During the consultation, I will explain everything in detail. Generally, preparation is simple:- No prolonged fasting is required
- You may eat a light meal before the procedure
- If you take blood-thinning medication, we may temporarily pause it
- It’s recommended to bring someone with you if it makes you feel more comfortable

How do I perform the cystoscopy?
The procedure takes less than 15 minutes. Local anesthesia is applied to the urethra, and the cystoscope is inserted to visualize the entire urethra and bladder. You may feel the urge to urinate or slight pressure, but it’s quick, and you can go home the same day. If during the examination I detect something that requires additional treatment, I will explain it to you right away, and we will plan the next step together, which may include urological surgeries or minimally invasive procedures.
Cystoscopy results
One of the benefits is that the results are immediate. I will explain what I see during the cystoscopy, and together we will make decisions about the appropriate management. If a prostate biopsy or other procedures are required, we will plan everything clearly for your peace of mind.
